Officer Involved Shooting Seminars

Police Training Services Company offers a variety of customizable Officer Involved Shooting Seminars. Our standard seminar is three days long and is presented in the following format:

The seminar will start with Dr. Bill Lewinski who is the founder and director of The Force Science Research Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.  Dr. Lewinski has an extensive background in “Human Performance in Lethal Force Encounters” and a Ph.D. in Police Psychology. Deputy Sheriff Mike Alagna (San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department) will follow and present his unique perspective on the OIS he was involved in which created national interest.  Mike will discuss not only the shooting but also the aftermath.  Retired Lieutenant Art Ruditsky (thirty years with the Los Angeles Police Department) will provide a block of instruction on how the patrol force should respond to and manage an OIS.

Detective Jack Forsman (L.A.P.D. Force Investigations Division) will provide insights on how to conduct the investigation.  Detective Forsman is one of the primary investigators responding to officer involved shooting for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The next segment will include Deputy District Attorney Shannon Presby of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.  His presentation will cover the needs and requirements of the local district attorney.

Captain Steve Rodig, recently retired from the Anaheim Police Department will discuss Use of Force legal issues.  Captain Rodig’s presentation will include information on statements, statue law and a variety of cases impacting current practices.  The final presenter will be retired Chief of Police Garrett Zimmon of the San Bernardino Police Department (a 32-year law enforcement veteran). He will provide attendees with the unique perspective that a Chief of Police offers, relative to the officer involved shooting.

Who should attend?  Any supervisor or officer responding to the initial scene; or anyone who will eventually investigate or review the OIS.

In the past PTSC's Officer Involved Shooting Seminars have been hosted by the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, Oakland Police Department and Indio Police Department. Additionally, PTSC has held Officer Involved Shooting Seminars in Riverside and Salt Lake City.
